In the late stages of the game, Werder right-back Mitchell Weiser went down inside the penalty area after receiving contact from Hoffenheim’s summer signing Stanley Nsoki. After a video review, the collision was deemed enough for a penalty to the disbelief of Hoffenheim and their coach, Andre Breitenreiter.
Following the game, Breitenreiter stated that, “(Weiser) did it very cleverly. We are all footballers too and know very well that he uses this contact for himself. He doesn’t have to fall.”
Weiser then defended himself and said, “(Nsoki) pulls my leg away. I took another step with my right leg, but then I lost my balance and fell. For me it’s a clear penalty.”
However, Breitenreiter understands that Hoffenheim had their chances to find an equalizer, as they registered far more total shots: “The fact is, we have to take a good look at ourselves, we had enough chances.”
