Mike Tyson Named Floyd Mayweather as the Greatest Boxer in the Last 100 Years

Once considered ‘the baddest man on the planet’, Mike Tyson could quite easily lay claim to being one of the greatest boxers of his generation. However, when he named ‘best fighter of the last 100 years’, Iron Mike had another legendary boxer in mind.

Tyson finished his professional career with a record of 50 wins, 7 losses and 2 no-contests, with 44 of his victories coming by way of knockout.

He still holds the record as the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history, having claimed the title at just 20 years old. His ferocious fighting style and devastating knockout power quickly made him one of the most feared men to ever step into the ring.

Tyson was also deeply inspired by Muhammad Ali, who served as his childhood idol and the driving force behind his decision to take up boxing. His admiration for the iconic fighter ran so deep that he vowed – and delivered – on his promise to avenge Ali’s 1980 defeat to Larry Holmes. Yet, when it came to naming the greatest boxer of the last century in 2023, Tyson appeared to have someone else at the top of his list.

On his own Hotboxin’ podcast, ‘Iron Mike’ was praising former UFC champion, Conor McGregor, for going 10 rounds with Floyd Mayweather in 2023, who he delivered even more flowers to:

“Proper 12. Connor [McGregor]. He’s a spectacle, but listen, this is where it’s not a spectacle. He never really had a boxing match in his life, right? He went 10 rounds with the greatest fighter in the last 100 years of boxing. He scored punches. Look what he did.”

The Mayweather-McGregor crossover fight recorded the second-highest pay-per-view buy rate in history after another Mayweather fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

The self proclaimed ‘Best Ever’ retired with an undefeated record boasting 50 wins from 50 fights. He was an 11-time, five-division world champion with 26 consecutive wins in world title fights along the way, though he recently returned to the ring for several money-spinning ‘influencer’ bouts.

A bout between Tyson and Mayweather was initially set for April 25 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, then shifted to May 30, 2026. But the former had broken his right hand during training, and a fight between the two icons still hasn’t taken place.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Tyson has once again reiterated his desire to step into the ring with the 49-year-old, despite him now being 60 years old himself. He said (watch the full segment below):

“I like to fight Floyd though… You know I’m going to beat his a**. I’m doing sprints now. I’m going to be ready to catch him… What you think I’m doing all these sprints for? I gotta catch this mo********r.”

Iron Mike’s most recent official/sanctioned heavyweight bout was a unanimous decision loss against Jake Paul on November 15, 2024, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

He had also previously drawn in an unofficial exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr in 2020. Meanwhile, the ‘Pretty Boy’ last competed in an exhibition rematch against John Gotti III on August 24, 2024, in Mexico City, where a mass brawl broke out at the end.
