Steven Gerrard Gives Honest Response to Man City’s Guilty Charges

With an independent commission finding Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, it’s hard to grasp just how big the fallout really is.

This weekend, the Etihad outfit played their first game since the news broke, beating Liverpool 3-0 away at Anfield. But with the prospect of sanctions hanging over the club, nobody really knows what that result will mean come the end of the season.

Beyond the impact on the present, the rule-breaking from 2009 to 2018 obviously has hugely influenced the past. Steven Gerrard is among those who were greatly affected during that era and he’s now given his honest thoughts on the matter.

Gerrard Discusses Missing out on a Premier League Medal

Steven Gerrard Slip

Gerrard is perhaps the greatest footballer to never win the Premier League. He came extremely close in 2013/14, when Liverpool finished second behind Man City by just two points.

The club’s former captain infamously slipped away at Chelsea when his team were five points clear at the top of the table. The Reds lost that game and went on to surrender the league title to City soon after.

However, there has now been talk that the Cityzens could be stripped of that Premier League triumph, which could see Gerrard belatedly handed a winners’ medal. The Englishman has now claimed that he wouldn’t be interested in that, but it doesn’t mean he’s entirely happy with how things have played out.

Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard began: “It’s not personal for me in terms of the Man City players, because they’re all outstanding players, they’ve lived the moment and they deserved to [win].

“I’m not someone who’s going to sit here and say I would accept a Premier League medal or I want one that they’ve got.

“I think I’ve come to terms that I’ve never won the Premier League, that I was short in that department in terms of winning it.

“I’ve come to terms with that. I’ve come to terms with the incident that happened to me at the back end of that season.”

Gerrard Questions What Has Been ‘Stolen’ by Man City’s Rule Breaking

Despite not wanting a Premier League title in the current circumstances, Gerrard wondered about the memories which have been robbed from him and others over the years. He said:

“And I’ve heard a lot of City players, a lot of City fans, celebrity fans, say ‘you can’t take those moments away from us’.

“What about the memories they’ve taken away from, not just possibly me and the team that I played in, but over that period of nine or 10 years? Spurs fans, United fans, Everton fans, teams at the bottom, teams in the cups.

“The City ex-players, current players and the City owners, everyone connected with City, have got to think about the memories that they potentially have stolen from everyone else.”

Gerrard finished his career at Anfield, with two FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Cup and most famously the Champions League.
