Manchester City and the Premier League held early-stage settlement talks before the club were found guilty on all charges of serious breaches of financial regulations.
An independent commission found that the club had artificially inflated its financial results by more than £900 million over a nine-season period. They used ‘sham’ commercial deals as part of decade-long systematic financial misconduct and are expected to be handed sporting as well as financial sanctions.
Key Events Timeline
City have maintained their innocence throughout the case and in a video sent to club employees, CEO Ferran Soriano insisted that the guilty verdicts were a ‘Premier League conspiracy theory.’ With ‘irrefutable evidence’ they lodged an appeal days after the commission’s findings were released, and legal experts consider the likelihood of a complete overturn being low.
Man City Settlement Talks With Premier League Broke Down
It has now been revealed by Bloomberg that City and the Premier League held discussions prior to the club suffering defeat in the case. Their sources have claimed that those initial talks ‘quickly fell apart’ due to the club ‘consistently proclaiming its innocence.’
While we await the Premier League’s sanctions, City could be relegated via a points’ deduction, stripped of their titles or kicked out of the top-flight. But had those discussions led to a settlement, it would have focused on a ‘sizable financial payment’ rather than the sporting punishments mentioned.
It’s claimed that because of the scale of the case, any settlement would likely have only decreased the size of the case, rather than resolved it. There has been no response from City or the Premier League regarding the reported talks and instead the appeal process is taking place.
A new three-person appeal board will be appointed and the verdict of the appeal is set to be published by early February. The expectation is that whether City are guilty or innocent, their fate will be confirmed by the end of the season.
Premier League Managers React to Man City Guilty Charges
The report claims that Arsenal and Liverpool would likely have ‘vehemently opposed’ a potential settlement because they are two of the clubs who lost out on titles during City’s period of trophy success. With the Premier League returning this weekend following a three-week international break, the case has been put to managers during press conferences.
City travel to Anfield for their first game since being found guilty and are expected to receive a hostile reception. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made clear he wants the case to be concluded soon: “I think uncertainty is not good for anyone involved but the process is ongoing so we have to be patient.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had been assistant to Pep Guardiola at City for three of the nine seasons the ‘sham’ deals were made. He told reporters that it’s ‘very important that we respect the process and the timelines.’
Another club affected during that period was Manchester United and manager Michael Carrick said that it had ‘personally’ affected him. When City won their first title in 2012, that came at the expense of Carrick as a player for United.
