Chris Sutton has caused a stir with his comments about Arsenal after their narrow Premier League victory over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Arsenal, who have been dominant at set-pieces all season, scored both of their goals from corners in their 2-1 victory over their London rivals.
The Gunners took the lead midway through the first half when William Saliba headed home, only for Chelsea to score a set-piece of their own when Piero Hincapie headed into his own net.
Mikel Arteta’s side took the lead once more in the second half when Jurrien Timber headed past Robert Sanchez and that proved to be the winner as the hosts held on for all three points.
Sutton did not hold back about Arsenal when discussing their Premier League title aspirations after the match. The 52-year-old, who won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995, was critical of Arsenal after their win vs Tottenham last week as he called them out for over celebrating.
He said after the match, per the Mirror: “Slightly concerned with the over celebrating from the Arsenal players. Celebrate at the end of the season when you have won the title.”
He has slammed Arsenal again following their win against Chelsea, suggesting that they would be the ‘ugliest winners in Premier League history’ should they end their title drought. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live:
“Set-piece Arsenal again. I do think they are going to win it. If they get over the line – will they be the ugliest Premier League winning team in history? The performance wasn’t there.”
His comments have gone down badly with Arsenal supporters. One said: “These guys used to make fun of Arsenal when Chelsea used to win the same way against us under Mourinho. Now can’t accept this when the tables have turned,” while a second commented: “The hate is crazy. Need to know what this club did to the English media.”
A third said: “This is embarrassing to say and actually so disrespectful and disgraceful from him.”
A Liverpool fan has even defended Arsenal, saying: “Chris Sutton off his rocker again? What a disgraceful comment. If corners win Arsenal a title, so be it. The rest should be ashamed of themselves for not knowing how to deal with it.”
Yaya Toure: I’m a Bit Disappointed in Arsenal
Sutton wasn’t the only high-profile name that criticised Arsenal following the match. Man City legend Yaya Toure said on Sky Sports that he was ‘disappointed’ in the manner of Arsenal’s victory.
“The first half was ok, it was ok. But I feel a bit disappointed, you know?” Toure said on Sky Sports.
“Because we want to see flowing games with scoring goals, chances created and things like that but we saw three goals, all from set-pieces, so it was strange.”
Patrick Vieira also said he was a ‘bit disappointed’ with his former side and that he ‘wants to see more’.
“I think from the Arsenal point of view what really matters is the three points. It is really important for them,” Vieira said on Sky Sports, per football365.
“When you look at the game a bit deeper, scoring from set-plays, the game was more open than we expected. You would expect Arsenal to go a little more forward.
“Chelsea were organised well defensively which stopped Arsenal from creating chances. When you are top of the Champions League table, top of the Premier League table, in the final of a cup, the expectation is higher.
“You expect more from this Arsenal. I am a little bit disappointed but what matters is to win. It’s not about the style because I think the style can be down to the fact they haven’t won the title in so long.
“There could be a little desperation and stress because they want to do so well that you are not taking the risks you are at the start of the season.
“Looking at where they are, a little bit of nervousness and pressure can have an impact on these games. I believe there is enough experience, quality, personality, to go on the field and win the game. think it does matter. Winning was obviously important for Arsenal but as a fan, I want to see more you know.”
