Anthony Gordon came close to joining Liverpool almost two years ago, but a fresh battle for his signature could emerge this summer with Arsenal now in the frame
Arsenal have reportedly emerged as the frontrunners to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon in the summer. The forward is wanted by Liverpool and Manchester United but Arsenal have stolen a march on their rivals and believe he would be keen on moving to London.
The England star came close to joining Liverpool in 2024. At the time, Newcastle were reluctant to let him leave for less than £100million, but Arsenal are said to be hopeful of landing him for £75m.
According to The Sun, Arsenal will move for the 25‑year‑old this summer despite interest from Liverpool and Manchester United. Mikel Arteta is understood to be a long‑term admirer of the winger, with links first emerging earlier this year.
Now, Arsenal are said to be leading the race ahead of Liverpool and United, and there is a belief within the club that Gordon would be open to a switch to north London.
He has two years remaining on his contract, and while Newcastle don’t want to lose him, there is a feeling that they could be open to negotiations if the offer was right. Despite Gordon’s Premier League and international pedigree, the same report claims Arsenal are aiming to land him for a fee in the region of £75-£80m.

Gordon, however, dismissed talk of a move last week and insists he is happy at Newcastle. When quizzed about the rumours of him being the next big star to exit Tyneside, he told Chronicle Live: “About me? I haven’t seen them. What are they saying?”
Upon hearing he’s been associated with Arsenal and Liverpool recently, Gordon responded: “It’s the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do (names out of the hat). I haven’t heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media).”
He added: “I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now.
“You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that [before] and I am not going to do that now.”
The report claims that the Gunners want to strengthen their left-hand side, which could throw Gabriel Martinelli’s future into doubt. The Brazilian has been in and out of the team all season and has only managed three Premier League goal contributions so far.
Aside from Gordon’s obvious qualities, his explosive pace and goal threat, Arteta is said to like his versatility, with Eddie Howe utilising him as a No. 9 several times this season.
Arsenal spent over £250million on eight first‑team players last summer, but they are in a strong position to reinvest again after deep runs in the Champions League and cup competitions.
The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League and are hoping to bring the Premier League title back to north London for the first time since 2004. Five points separate them and second-place Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s man have a game in hand, with the title race set to go down to the wire.
