The Premier League has issued statements after two more players reported instances of racial abuse on social media following matches on Sunday.
Both Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle were targeted after their clubs suffered defeats this weekend. The former had a penalty saved by Dean Henderson in the Old Gold’s 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace, with Evann Guessand going on to score in the 90th minute at Selhurst Park.
Mundle, meanwhile, came on as a substitute in Sunderland’s 3-1 loss against Fulham. He missed a chance in added time at the end of the game.
Premier League Statement as Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana Shares Racist Abuse Received
Both Wesley Fofana and Hannibal Mejbri were subjected to racial abuse following Chelsea 1-1 Burnley.
In the aftermath of both 2pm games ending, abuse has been directed at both Arokodare and Mundle. While the latter has deactivated his Instagram account as a result, Arokodare has shared screenshots of the messages directed at him.
In a statement, he wrote: “It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences.
“These individuals should have no place in our game and collectively we have to take action to punish everyone who taints the sport like this, no matter who they are.”
Wolves, Sunderland and Premier League Condemn Abuse
Having reported the comments to their clubs, both Wolves and Sunderland have issued statements on their respective websites. The former said: “Wolves are disgusted by numerous instances of racist abuse, from multiple perpetrators, directed at Tolu Arokodare on social media following today’s fixture against Crystal Palace.
“There is no place for racism – in football, online, or anywhere in society. We condemn this abhorrent and unlawful behaviour in the strongest possible terms.
“Tolu has our full and unwavering support. No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job. We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity.
“The club has reported the posts to the relevant platforms and will work with the Premier League and the authorities to help identify those responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken. We will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination.”
Sunderland’s statement echoed that sentiment, as the Black Cats added: “The Club is actively working with the relevant authorities and online platforms to identify those responsible, and we will take the strongest possible action available to us. These individuals do not represent Sunderland AFC, our values, or our community – and they are not welcome on Wearside.”
Following the words of both clubs, the Premier League have also issued their own statements on the matter, stating: “There are serious consequences for anybody found guilty of discrimination and we will offer our full support with their investigations. Football is for everyone – there is no room for racism.”
Fofana and Hannibal Both Abused After Saturday’s Matches
The abuse directed at both Arokodare and Mundle follows similar instances of racial abuse directed at Wesley Fofana and Hannibal Mejbri in the wake of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Burnley.
Fofana, like Arokodare, took to social media to share screenshots of the abuse directed at him. He added: “2026, it’s still the same thing, nothing changes. These people are never punished. You create big campaigns against racism, but nobody actually does anything.”
Hannibal, who was also targeted by individuals after the game, echoed those comments in his own post. He wrote: “It’s 2026 and there’s still people like that. Educate yourself and your kids please.”
Burnley and Chelsea have both reported each instance to the police and relevant social media platforms.
