Julian Alvarez scored 29 goals in his first season at Atletico Madrid, but Arsenal and Chelsea face a battle to sign the former Manchester City striker
Julian Alvarez is reportedly more inclined towards a move to Barcelona, despite interest from Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea.
The 26-year-old former Manchester City forward has been a sensation since his transfer to Atletico Madrid last year, netting 29 goals in his debut season in the Spanish capital. With growing interest in the Argentine star this year, rumours of a potential split between Atletico and their key striker persist.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have recently been suggested as possible destinations for Alvarez, who made a strong impression during his stint in the Premier League, even though he couldn’t displace Erling Haaland.
However, Spanish publication Sport reports that if an exit from Atletico were to occur in the near future, Alvarez would prefer to stay in Spain with Barcelona.

Sources close to Alvarez suggest that the striker harbours ambitions to play for Barca in the future, although it’s acknowledged that such a move could be challenging at present given Barcelona’s likely struggle to meet Atletico’s valuation for such a pivotal player, reports the Mirror.
The report also discloses that Atletico have already put forward a new contract offer to Alvarez in an attempt to ward off interest from some of Europe’s elite. They want to secure the striker on fresh terms despite the fact he is already contracted until 2030, though it remains to be seen if Alvarez will agree to do so.
Manchester United are mentioned alongside Arsenal and Chelsea when it comes to Premier League clubs who would hold an interest in bringing Alvarez back to England after his two-year spell with Manchester City.
Intriguingly, all three clubs invested heavily in new strikers last summer, with Arsenal and United bringing in Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko respectively. Chelsea added Joao Pedro and Liam Delap to their squad.
However, none have been huge hits with Pedro the highest scorer of the quartet when it comes to Premier League goals with 10, followed by Gyokeres on eight. Sesko has six league goals, whilst Delap has scored just once.
Alvarez netted 36 goals in his two years at The Etihad, winning two league titles and the Champions League.
