Aston Villa are eyeing a summer move to sign Sporting CP star Geny Catamo, and they could get him with a huge discount, according to TEAMtalk.
Unai Emery’s side have had an excellent season so far and look on course to qualify for the Champions League next season, which has left the club considering options to further strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer window.
One position they are keen to strengthen is their attack, having lost Donyell Malen and Evann Guessand in the January transfer window, and with the future of Harvey Elliott far from certain, and they have identified a market opportunity for someone they’re taking a close look at.
Aston Villa Want to Sign Geny Catamo
Catamo, who has been described as ‘electric’, has enjoyed a fine season in Portugal so far this campaign, registering six goals and four assists so far for the Portuguese champions across all competitions.
His performances have seen the club reward him with a brand new long-term contract, which includes a release clause worth €60m (£52m) and with his wages doubled as a result. However, it’s understood that the clause is more to put the club’s rivals off trying to poach him, and Sporting could still be open to an exit this summer.
Aston Villa were linked with a move for the Mozambique international last summer, and still hold an interest, with the left-footed, right-winger fitting the profile wanted.
Aston Villa Cant Sign Catamo at Discount
It’s understood that Sporting would be willing to sell Catamo to another European club for a more reasonable price, as they would still make a profit.
Aston Villa are reported to retain an interest, and a bid of around €20m (£17m) could be enough to convince Sporting to let him leave, meaning a major discount from the release clause in his contract.
With Leon Bailey unlikely to stay at the club beyond this season, and Jadon Sancho only on loan, a move has become a real possibility.
What Would Catamo Bring to Villa?
With Emery pushing to strengthen his squad, GIVEMESPORT asked ChatGPT what Catamo would add to the Aston Villa side, and this was its response:
- Direct pace and ball-carrying threat on the right, helping stretch defences and add transition speed.
- Strong dribbling and 1v1 ability, with high successful dribble and progressive carry metrics.
- Versatility to play as a winger, wing-back or wide midfielder in different systems.
- Attacking output with goals/assists, plus willingness to shoot from range.
- High duel success and assertive attacking play style.
- Adds left-footed balance and width on the right flank
