Inter Milan vs Barcelona Preview

Barcelona head to Milan this week for another mouth-watering European clash. They produced a strong performance but didn’t get the result in Munich three weeks ago but Xavi’s team will be hoping that both will come this time around against the Italian giants.
It feels like the first real pressure game of Barcelona’s season so far. The clash with Bayern was of course big but defeat was not terminal and there were still plenty of positives for Barça to take away from it. Another loss here would however be seriously damaging and would leave them fighting for their lives in the group stage of this competition for the second season running.
The importance Xavi is placing on this game was clear from his weekend team selection. The likes of Pedri and Raphinha were left on the bench despite some significant injury problems as Barcelona secured a 1-0 win at Mallorca thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s 20th minute goal. The Polish international continues to be the main goal threat for this team but he’ll need to have a better night here than he did on his return to Munich, the only major blip in what has been a dream start to Lewandowski’s time in Catalunya so far.
As for Inter, they also come into this game on 3 points having also beaten Viktoria Plzen but lost to Bayern. Domestically though, things are not going well for Simone Inzaghi’s side. Just 8 games into their Serie A campaign, they have already lost 4 matches, the same number of defeats that they suffered in the whole of last season.
Their latest setback came on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Roma, their 3rd defeat in 4 matches. The most striking statistic is that they’ve conceded 13 goals and only 4 sides in the Italian top flight have let in more. An injury to star striker Romelu Lukaku doesn’t aid their chances here either.

Score Prediction: Inter Milan 2-2 Barcelona
This is a tale of two teams with defensive concerns right now. Inter’s feel more systemic while Barcelona’s are of the selection variety with Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo both significant injury absentees while Hector Bellerin is also missing, leaving them really light at right-back, although they did manage to keep another clean sheet in LaLiga at the weekend. This will be a different kind of game and we should see both teams create chances here with a few goals likely but Barça’s attacking quality ought to ensure they leave with at worst a point.
