Leicester City are advancing in talks to appoint Gary Rowett as their new manager on a deal until the end of the 2025/2026 campaign, according to journalist John Percy.
Marti Cifuentes was sacked as manager back in January, with the Midlands club sitting in the bottom half of the Championship table. Leicester’s situation worsened last week, after they were slapped with a six-point deduction for breaching the Football League’s financial regulations.
The points deduction and recent results has seen Leicester City plunged into the relegation zone, and with their disastrous form at the moment, dropping down to League One is a serious possibility unless they can quickly turn things around.
Leicester Advance on Managerial Appointment
According to journalist Percy, Leicester are now in advanced talks to appoint Rowett on a short-term deal until the end of the season. Rowett, described as ‘excellent’ by Jamie Mackie, has been out of work since December after he departed Oxford United.
The 51-year-old is now Leicester’s ‘top target’ and talks are expected to progress over the next 24 hours. If negotiations go as planned, Rowett should be in the dugout to face one of his former clubs, Stoke City, in the Championship this weekend.
Percy also adds that Leicester are considering appealing their six-point deduction, and if they are successful, that could see them climb out of the relegation zone. There’s certainly no guarantee that they can have the deduction wiped off, so the Foxes need to act fast to get a new manager in place.
Looking at Leicester’s team on paper, there is absolutely no way they should be battling in the relegation zone. It’s not worked out for them this season, and some of their star players are underperforming, but Rowett will undoubtedly be excited to work with the current squad.
Abdul Fatawu, for example, is one of the best wingers in the Championship, while players such as Harry Winks, Stephy Mavididi, and Oliver Skipp have experience playing at a higher level.
Whether Rowett has the tools to keep Leicester in the division remains to be seen, but maybe a new manager and some fresh ideas is what the players need in order to head back in the right direction.
Is Gary Rowett the Right Man for Leicester?
With Rowett set to take charge at the King Power Stadium, GIVEMESPORT asked ChatGPT to explain why he would be a good fit for Leicester in their current situation. They responded…
- Gary Rowett delivers immediate structure. His teams are compact, defensively organised and difficult to play through — critical for a side in the Championship relegation zone that must stop conceding transitions and cheap goals quickly.
- Proven stabiliser at this level. Rowett has repeatedly improved underperforming Championship squads, maximising points through clear roles, disciplined pressing triggers and pragmatic game management.
- Experience handling pressure. He understands promotion–relegation swings and can reset standards fast — ideal for a squad adjusting to expectation after recent turbulence.
