But Liverpool are understood to be the frontrunners for his signature, according to CaughtOffside.
Liverpool Almost Signed Gordon 13 Years Ago
Gordon is keen on a move back to Merseyside, having started out with city rivals Everton. He could have even signed for the Reds when he was 11.
Neil Dewsnip signed Gordon when he was head coach of Everton’s academy. Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “Anthony was my last signing at Everton. He was a boy we looked at a few times, as did Liverpool.”
Liverpool also tried to sign Gordon from Newcastle in 20204, just a year after he made the move to St James’ Park from Everton.
Then it was a deal that was agreed that would help Newcastle to comply with Profit & Sustainability Rules, but the Magpies sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion instead, meaning they did not need to let Gordon go in the end.
Champions League Qualification Could Be Key to Signing
Gordon is understood to favour a move back to Merseyside if he leaves St James’ Park this summer or in the future, but it may hinge on whether or not Champions League football is available.
The England international, whom Newcastle boss Eddie Howe described as “outstanding” following his Three Lions debut in 2024, will have plenty of suitors come the summer transfer window, but if Liverpool could pull off a deal it would certainly knock Arsenal’s transfer plans back, given the Gunners’ long-held interest in the player.
