Gareth Southgate Emerging as Strong Contender for Tottenham Job

Gareth Southgate is emerging a ‘shock’ contender to replace Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur, according to TEAMtalk.

Spurs are looking for their sixth permanent manager since Mauricio Pochettino was sacked in 2019 after five years in charge of the club.

Frank was dismissed following a run of just two wins in 17 Premier League matches, which has left the north London outfit embroiled in a relegation battle alongside the likes of Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United.

Tottenham lie five points above the bottom three ahead of a huge match against Arsenal at home next weekend, in which they will hope to have either an interim or permanent manager in place.

‘Surprise’ Gareth Southgate Development

While managers such as Pochettino and the newly-available Roberto De Zerbi -who is willing to travel to London for talks according to GIVEMESPORT sources – are being heavily mentioned for the Tottenham job, former England boss Southgate is emerging as a surprise candidate, according to TEAMtalk.

The report says that the 55-year-old has some support from senior figures at Spurs, who believe that the leadership and man-management skills he showed during his time in charge of the Three Lions could be just what they need to rebuild a fractious dressing room.

While Southgate’s name has been raised during internal conversations at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it’s unclear whether he would be keen to take on the role.

Southgate previously said prior to Ruben Amorim’s appointment at Manchester United that he was in no rush to return to management having resigned from the England job following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Southgate a Better Interim Option for Tottenham

Whether Tottenham should be seriously considering Southgate depends on which avenue they are planning to go down in terms of their next manager.

There would have to be question marks over appointing the 55-year-old on a long-term deal, given he hasn’t managed in club football since 2009 with Middlesbrough.

17 years is a long time in club football, and it will have changed and adapted a lot, so bringing him in as their manager for the next few years would have to be viewed as a risk.

On the flip-side, if Spurs believe they need a manager who can bring the team and the whole club together in the remaining months of the campaign as they look to fend off a relegation battle – and if he is willing to do it – then Southgate could be one of the best options available to ENIC.
