Nottingham Forest have sacked Sean Dyche, confirming his departure in a brief 57-word statement that brought an abrupt end to his time at the City Ground.

The club announcement, released in the early hours of Thursday, followed Wednesday evening’s goalless draw with Wolves and confirmed Dyche had been “relieved of his duties as head coach.” Forest thanked Dyche and his staff for their work and added there would be no further comment. The concise nature of the statement reflected a decision the club were keen to execute swiftly, rather than publicly justify at length. Dyche’s final match in charge proved to be a frustrating one.

Forest, a team that was in Champions League contention a year ago, were held to a frustrating draw at home by bottom club Wolves. They are just three points above the Premier League relegation zone with 12 matches to play.

Forest’s hierarchy appear to have concluded that patience carried greater risk than action. Despite significant investment in the squad and a wealth of attacking talent, Forest have struggled to consistently impose themselves, particularly in games where expectations were higher.
