Liverpool got back to winning ways and made up important ground in their pursuit of Champions League football next season with a 1-0 win over Sunderland on Wednesday night. Regis Le Bris’ side had already been playing with house money after their terrific season so far, but the Premier League champions finally brought an end to the Black Cats’ unbeaten home run for the campaign.
After ramping up the pressure in the latter stages of the first half through Florian Wirtz’s intricate play, it took captain Virgil van Dijk rising highest from a corner to open the scoring just beyond the hour mark, becoming Liverpool’s highest-scoring defender in the competition’s history. Although the hosts reacted well and created chances of their own, the Reds dug in and held on to cut the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Manchester United to three points.
Throughout the hard-fought performance from Arne Slot’s side, there were several standout displays, including from the aforementioned Wirtz, but it was another much-discussed player who received the bulk of the plaudits as he looked far more like his “world-class” self in midweek.
Ibrahima Konate Praised for Return to Form in Sunderland Win
During his punditry duties for TNT Sports, Ally McCoist rightly highlighted Brian Brobbey’s tussle with Ibrahima Konate as a key matchup early into proceedings. In the end, it was the latter that asserted his physicality over the other and put in several high-tariff tackles to stop his opponent from causing an upset – with his knack for important goals being a key theme in Sunderland’s season so far.
Across the duration of his performance, Konate managed to notch nine total defensive contributions, including four clearances, a blocked shot, and a key interception. The Frenchman, who has previously been criticised for appearing to be distarcted by transfer links to Real Madrid earlier in the term, also won all three of his ground duels and four of his five aerial duels. Reacting to his performance online, one X user wrote:
“[Ibrahima] Konate has been back to his world class best the last few weeks.”
A second added: “Konate has legit been unbelievable since coming back,” a third continued: “Dare I say it, but it seems like Konate is definitely getting back on form,” while a fourth remarked: “I think we finally got the real Konate back.” Elsewhere, another concluded: “Monstrous performance from Konate tonight.”
Lay of the Land on Konate’s Dwindling Contract
At the peak of their powers, Konate and Van Dijk form a rock-solid centre-back partnership, and the 26-year-old has long looked primed to fill his teammate’s big shoes at some point. However, it now appears increasingly likely he could leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in June, with negotiations between the club and player having stalled.
It remains to be seen whether he is hoping to force a move to Real Madrid in similar fashion to Trent Alexander-Arnold several months ago. Reports around Jurgen Klopp’s potential takeover at the Bernabeu – and his alleged desire for two new centre-backs – would no doubt be an encouraging sign for the defender as he eyes a reunion with his former boss.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s spending suggests the club has already been preparing for his departure. The Reds have already agreed a £60 million deal for 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet ahead of a summer move, having previously signed the injured Giovanni Leoni before the 2025/26 campaign.
