Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta will not undergo surgery on his knee injury, manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed ahead of the club’s upcoming Premier League fixture.
The 28-year-old has been managing the issue since November, with the club opting for a cautious approach rather than an immediate surgical intervention.
Mateta was notably left out of the FA Cup third-round defeat to Macclesfield after Crystal Palace decided not to risk him on an artificial surface.
Concerns over the knee also contributed to a proposed move to AC Milan collapsing on transfer deadline day.
The Serie A club ultimately chose not to proceed after medical checks raised doubts about Mateta’s condition.
Glasner revealed that a fourth medical opinion was sought before a final decision was taken.
Following discussions involving specialists, the club’s medical department and the player himself, surgery was ruled out.
The Crystal Palace manager described the outcome as a positive development for both the player and the club.
Glasner explained that the injury was not as severe as initially feared and could be managed through rehabilitation.
While Mateta will still miss time, the decision removes the uncertainty surrounding a lengthy surgical recovery.
The French forward will now focus on strengthening the muscles around the knee to provide greater support.
Glasner confirmed that Mateta will not return to full training for at least the next two weeks.
Any comeback will be gradual, with careful monitoring to ensure there is no further damage.
Avoiding surgery also keeps alive Mateta’s hopes of forcing his way into France’s squad for the summer World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

An operation would likely have ruled him out of international contention for an extended period.
Instead, the striker will aim to return to Crystal Palace action, regain form and put himself back into Didier Deschamps’ plans.
Glasner stressed the importance of clarity for the player after weeks of speculation around his future.
He confirmed Mateta will remain a Crystal Palace player at least until the summer.
The manager acknowledged that external noise and transfer uncertainty can affect a player’s performances.
He believes the clear medical pathway will help Mateta refocus on his football.
Glasner also addressed criticism from sections of the Crystal Palace support in recent matches.
He urged fans to continue backing the striker when he returns to action.
The manager said Mateta has always given his best for the club and deserves full support.
Glasner added that while disappointment is natural, it is important for everyone to look forward rather than dwell on the past.
