Jordan Henderson was left in absolute disbelief after hearing who was awarded the Man of the Match award for Brentford’s 3-2 victory at Newcastle United. The win followed another impressive Premier League triumph at Villa Park six days earlier.
The Bees have been sensational under Keith Andrews, dispelling the concerns and doubts many had about them after Thomas Frank’s departure. In fact, the west London outfit are in serious contention for European football next season, as they currently sit seventh in the English top-flight.
Igor Thiago’s return to fitness has seen Bryan Mbeumo’s goals replaced seamlessly, while Henderson’s arrival from Ajax steadied a midfield that had just lost Christian Norgaard. Goals from Vitaly Janelt, Thiago and Dango Ouattara were enough to see off the Magpies at St James’ Park.
Jordan Henderson Stunned by MOTM Decision vs Newcastle
After falling behind to a Sven Botman goal, Brentford had turned the game on its head before the half-time whistle. Midfielder Janelt popped up with his first goal in over a year, guiding a header beyond Nick Pope to equalise before Thiago netted from the penalty spot.
Bruno Guimaraes thought he’d rescued a point for Eddie Howe’s out-of-form Newcastle, but Ouattara had other ideas. The forward fired the ball into the bottom corner in the 85th minute to seal all three points for the visitors.

After the match, Henderson was joined by his midfield partner Janelt for Sky Sports’ post-match interview. As the pair went to depart, the German was handed the Player of the Match award, but asked if he could pass it on to Ouattara in the dressing room.
A stunned Henderson stopped in his tracks and questioned the decision not to give Janelt the accolade. He said:
“He didn’t get it? He didn’t get the award?
“No chance, who decides that? It’s about time he got one. Come on!”
Proving he’s a great leader and always backs his teammates, the England international then stood with his hands on his head, looking confused. Watch the brilliant moment below.
Henderson Heaps Praise on ‘Outstanding’ Brentford Teammates
Speaking before his priceless reaction to the MOTM decision, the veteran midfielder heaped praise on his team, citing the long wait the Bees have had for a win at Newcastle. Henderson said:
“We knew it was a big game for us. I can’t remember the last time we won here. 1934. It’s been a long time.”
“It was a big game for us to come here and put on a performance and try to get three points. I thought the boys were outstanding again.”
A Sunderland fan growing up, it was even more special for Henderson to get a win at the Black Cats’ biggest rivals. He continued: “The reaction from the boys was top-class. Going in at half-time 2-1, we knew in the second half it would be difficult at St James’ Park with the atmosphere and they’re a top team. I thought the lads dug in really well and deservedly got the three points.”
