Tennis star Renata Zarazua felt the full force of the heat Down Under ahead of this year’s Australian Open, posting a topless photo in the build-up to the Grand Slam showing off her severe sunburn.
The 28-year-old Mexican took part in the Hobart International in preparation for the first Slam of the year, but she didn’t take into account how serious the heat would be… or she simply opted against wearing sun cream.
The world number 80 took to social media ahead of the tournament revealing the damage caused by the blistering Tasmanian sun, sharing a topless photo of her back in a bathroom mirror, with her shoulders red raw due to the heat.
Renata Zarazua’s Tennis Career
Zarazua has been making waves in Mexican tennis, becoming the first woman to break into the top 100 in both singles and doubles.
Her breakthrough came at last year’s US Open where she defeated the reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, becoming the first Mexican to defeat a top-10 seed at a Grand Slam in nearly three decades.
She later claimed that, due to nerves, she considered not showing up to her first round match at Flushing Meadows.
She said: “I swear, I don’t know what happened to me today. I was just so nervous before going on court. I woke up, and I just had the urge to cry. It was almost like I was afraid of taking the court, and that’s never happened to me before.
“I was like, how is this possible? This is what I love to do. How can I transform this fear into something?”
Despite a solid showing on court at the Hobart International earlier in the month, where she was defeated by third seed Iva Jovic in the round of 16, Zarazua had been battling with the elements off the court.
Renata Zarazua’s Horrific Sunburn
She took to Instagram to share a photo of her awful-looking sunburn alongside the caption: “Australian sun is no joke.” The photo shows her back and shoulders covered in blotchy sore burns.
Things didn’t get much better for the Mexican Down Under either, as she was eliminated in the first round, losing to Marie Bouzkova in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
Since her elimination from the Australian Open, Zarazua has been taking part in a tournament in the UAE, where she advanced to the semi-final before having to retire due to injury.
