England supporters have now been issued with an urgent warning from the UK government for those planning a trip to the 2026 World Cup. The USA, Mexico and Canada are joint hosts of football’s biggest international competition this summer, and the Three Lions will be hoping that Thomas Tuchel will be the one to nip the bud in a 60-year trophy drought.

Harry Kane and co. will travel across the Atlantic as one of the most in-form nations, which has rightly placed them among the favourites for glory after losing successive European Championship finals prior to their new manager’s appointment. A perfect qualifying campaign saw them become the first European nation ever to win all eight games without conceding a goal.

Naturally, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s concerning alert this week isn’t about whether buying tickets to see the Three Lions in person might be a wasted effort – the team’s entertainment value is arguably at its highest in decades. Nor does it relate to safety concerns amid the political climate in the USA; instead, the focus of the warning is actually on Mexico.

UK Government Warns Fans Travelling To Mexico During 2026 World Cup

Although England’s group fixtures against Croatia, Ghana and Panama take place in the US, knockout fixtures could see them travel to Mexico, and now the UK government has issued a warning about the precautions they will need to take there, even if the beer and match tickets are likely to be much cheaper.

The UK government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued a raft of warnings, ranging from alcohol intake to drugs and corrupt police officers, as fans start to book their flights and hotels ahead of what promises to be a huge footballing summer. They have warned:

England fans are well known for travelling abroad and ending up in trouble with local authorities. But, in Mexico, it’s especially important they avoid being detained by someone who lacks the proper authority to do so. The FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) adds: “Be wary of criminals posing as police officers and trying to fine or arrest you for no reason. They have targeted travellers driving rental cars.

“Some genuine police officers have extorted money from tourists for alleged minor offences or traffic violations.” You’ll also want to keep a close eye on your belongings in Mexico, as “pickpocketing and theft are common”, especially on public transport. Fans are urged to avoid wearing expensive-looking clothing, jewellery or watches and to limit the amount of cash or credit cards they carry.

Issues Aren’t Limited To Just Mexico

The reality is, the World Cup is set in a troubled part of the globe currently, and there are perhaps even more issues with the USA than there are with Mexico at the moment. There have been calls for the US to be stipped of hosting rights, with Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling tipping the United Kingdom as an alternative.

Elsewhere, several countries set to participate in the World Cup already appear on the USA’s travel ban list. Just a couple of weeks ago as well, almost 17,000 supporters reportedly cancelled their tickets amid fears surrounding Donald Trump’s escalating conflict with Venezuela, which has also seen relations with Colombia, Cuba sour in recent months.

The biggest issue of late is the USA’s tension with Europe, as the White House leader’s desire to take full control of Greenland intensifies. Trump has consistently slandered NATO publicly, while threatening to “use excessive force” to take over Denmark’s land, proving Mexico isn’t the only place Brits must worry about when travelling stateside in less than six months’ time.
