The visitors took the lead ten minutes before half-time as Leon Schneider beat his own goalkeeper in his desperate attempt to defend Phil Harres’ cutback. Kiel doubled their lead before the end of first-half with Ivan Nekic’s free header from a corner-kick.
Nekic, who has scored his second goal in three matches, was sent off twenty minutes from time with his second yellow card accompanied by a penalty-kick decision. Joel Grodowski pulled one back for the hosts from 12 yards.
Noah Sarenren Bazee salvaged the point for Bielefeld with a close-range header in the closing stages of the game. They even had a chance to steal all three points, but the captain Mael Corboz was denied by Kiel’s goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey.
Kiel missed out on climbing to the top half of the standings, but the four-point lead over their hosts remained intact. Marcel Rapp’s side host Greuther Fürth on matchday 20, while Bielefeld will face fellow newly-promoted side Dynamo Dresden.
