Alan Shearer Thinks Only PSG Can Stop Arsenal Winning 25/26 Champions League

Former Newcastle United man Alan Shearer has claimed that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, the only team to remain unbeaten in this season’s Champions League, have a ‘really good chance’ of winning the 2025/26 iteration of the competition. The striker-turned-pundit, though, did name one team who could prevent the Gunners from claiming glory.

Arteta – widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football – could be the mastermind behind the north Londoners’ maiden Champions League success come the back end of May and their 3-1 win over Inter Milan on Tuesday was a statement of their intent.

Earlier this week, Gabriel Jesus was at the double by scoring either side of Petar Susic’s 18th-minute strike, and it was Viktor Gyokeres who put the finishing touches on a resounding victory at San Siro as the Swede cushioned a superb finish into the top corner to seal all three points. But who, in the eyes of Shearer, can halt Arsenal’s incredible run?

Shearer Names The One Team Who Could Prevent Arsenal From Winning 2025/26 Champions League

As mentioned, the English outfit’s record on the European stage has been spotless from start to finish: they’ve won all seven of their Champions League outings this term, including a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid and a 3-1 triumph over Bayern Munich. Not only that but they are seven points adrift of their nearest challengers at the top of the Premier League.

Many people believe that Arsenal – who have finished runners-up in England’s top division for three seasons on the bounce – are their own worst enemy as they lack the minerals to turn a raft of victories into silverware of some form.

If history is anything to go by, silverware is far from guaranteed, as it’s been 22 years since they last reigned triumphant in England’s top flight (when Arsene Wenger’s men went invincible) and they are also regarded as one of the biggest clubs to never win the Champions League.

Villarreal are among the four teams mathematically unable to progress into the knockout rounds of the 2025/26 Champions League.

Even before swiping the floor with Cristian Chivu’s Inter, Shearer is of the impression that Arteta’s men are well within their rights to believe they are among the favourites. “There is no doubt that this mob tonight, Arsenal, have got a really good chance of being there,” he said.

Continuing on Amazon Prime’s Champions League coverage of the encounter in the Italian capital, Shearer believed that Paris Saint-Germain, managed by the imperious Luis Enrique, are the only team who can prevent the Gunners from picking up their maiden crown.

“But I just think because of what PSG did last year, the players that they have, I’m just going to edge it with PSG. But Arsenal won’t be far away.”

Asked who he believes PSG, who thrashed Inter 5-0 in the final last term, will oversee in the final, Shearer said: “Probably Arsenal. I don’t think so [that it would be a 5-0 scoreline again if PSG did face Arsenal in the final]. I think with the confidence and the belief that Arsenal have.

“And you’ve seen, with the turnover of players in terms of the squad, that he can leave on the squad and they still look a very, very strong team and a team capable of coming and winning here tonight [at Inter],” the ex-Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers talisman said. “That will certainly help them in the moments ahead so, yeah, PSG and Arsenal [as favourites].”

In terms of who will reign triumphant in the Premier League, a division Arsenal currently sit atop of, Shearer believes there is no team in England currently on the level of the north Londoners. “I think they’ll win the Premier League with the seven point advantage they’ve got,’ Shearer said.

“It was a really good weekend for them with Manchester City and Aston Villa dropping points again. Again, I go back to the squad and how many changes they can make. It doesn’t affect them.”

Having so many key players returning from injury means that Arsenal will be prepared for the run-in between now and the end of term, Shearer claimed. “They’re getting injuries back with Gabriel Jesus and with Kai Havertz as well. And I think defensively… that’s the key for me, that they just don’t give many goals away, and they’re so strong at the back.

It’s a three-horse race between Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa – but how difficult are their remaining fixtures?

“So I think they’ll go ahead and they’ll do it,” he concluded about Arteta’s men, who face Manchester United next on Sunday 25 January. As they conclude January and enter February, Leeds United, Chelsea and Sunderland are their next three matches in the Premier League.
