Celtic will have an €8m purchase option to make Tomas Cvancara’s move from Borussia Monchengladbach permanent after the season, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed.
The Hoops have agreed a deal with the Bundesliga side for the Czech forward’s arrival, with Cvancara set to become Celtic’s first January signing under Martin O’Neill.
Celtic will reportedly cover Cvancara’s full remaining salary until the end of the season, worth around €1m gross, amounting to around £34,000 per week.
Cvancara spent the first part of the season on loan at Turkish outfit Antalyaspor, where he scored two goals in 13 appearances.
Celtic Set to Sign Tomas Cvancara
Plettenberg, writing on X, revealed that Celtic will have the option to make Cvancara’s arrival permanent this summer, after agreeing a €8m option with Gladbach.
Cvancara joined Gladbach from Sparta Prague in the summer of 2023 and scored six goals in 49 appearances during his two seasons with the German club. The 25-year-old made seven starts in the Bundesliga in 2024/25, netting twice.
An eight-cap Czechia international, Cvancara scored his only international goal on his debut, in a 3-1 win over Poland in March 2023. The 25-year-old last featured for Czechia in October 2024.
Celtic Desperate for New Striker
Celtic are looking to bring in a new striker as a top priority this month, having heavily relied on Johnny Kenny in recent games, with the 22-year-old netting six times in 21 appearances across all competitions.
Kelechi Iheanacho remains unavailable after picking up another injury in the League Cup final in December, while Shin Yamada has featured from the bench recently.
Julian Araujo’s arrival on loan from Bournemouth remains Celtic’s only piece of business this window, while Odin Holm and Stephen Walsh have returned from their respective loan spells.
Celtic have won all three games since O’Neill took over from Wilfried Nancy earlier this month, and next take on Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday.
Celtic Eyeing Another Bundesliga Star
Celtic are anticipating a busy end to the January transfer window and could look to bolster their midfield with another Bundesliga star before the February 2 deadline.
According to reports, the Hoops are interested in signing RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager, who has less than 12 months remaining on his contract.
