Everton could look to complete one of the biggest transfer deals in their recent history, according to reports from Europe – with the Toffees thought to be eyeing up a sensational return for former star, Romelu Lukaku.
The Toffees have struggled for goals this season, only scoring more goals than Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and the bottom three in the Premier League table.
That is largely down to poor striking output, but David Moyes appears to have a solution in place, with the Merseyside outfit seemingly eyeing a move for former star Lukaku to fix their goalscoring woes.
Report: Everton ‘Have Ambitious Plan’ to Bring Back Romelu Lukaku
The report by Spanish outlet Fichajes states that the winter transfer window could open up the chance for Lukaku to don the famous royal blue shirt once again in his career, after departing the club nine years ago.
The publication states that the Toffees are ‘seriously considering’ bringing back their former star striker as a result of the alarming inconsistency of their current attacking options in Thierno Barry and Beto.
Whilst young French star Barry notched just his fourth Premier League goal at the weekend, he and Beto are only on a combined six in the Premier League, which has thrown up huge issues for David Moyes going forward.
And, with Napoli looking to offload Lukaku ‘immediately’, it seems to be almost the perfect opportunity for Moyes to bring the former Everton star back to Merseyside despite his £30million move to Naples at the start of last season.
Dubbed a ‘golden opportunity’, Napoli have only set a fee of around £17million for the Belgian’s signature, albeit Everton will have huge wages to contend with, as Capology have estimated him at £170,000-a-week.
There is no doubting that the Toffees can afford that transfer fee, especially for such a pressing issue within their squad, but getting a deal over the line is easier said than done.
The Toffees are looking to make a statement in the Premier League, having breached the top ten in recent months, and Lukaku would certainly be of that ilk.
Lukaku Has Scored Goals Galore Throughout His Career
Barring his poor campaign for Chelsea after a huge move in 2021, Lukaku has hit double figures in each league campaign in his career since 2012.
There is no doubting that he knows exactly where the net is, and that was evidenced by his 87 goals in just 166 games for Everton – 68 of which came in the Premier League in just 141 league outings.
The Belgian powerhouse has scored goals wherever he has been, and even though he’s not played this season due to a hamstring injury, the 32-year-old would be an astute signing for Moyes, profiting off the technical brilliance of Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among others.
