Cologne ended their eight game winless streak after coming from behind to beat Mainz 2-1 at the RheinEnergieStadion on Matchday 18, with Ragnar Ache netting a brace.
Heading into the game, there was certainly question marks regarding the future of head coach Lukas Kwasniok with three draws and five defeats heading into their clash against Urs Fischer’s Mainz, who took the lead through Stefan Bell.
Speaking after the game, Cologne sporting director Thomas Kessler continued to back Kwasniok, who was appointed in the summer.
“I have complete confidence in our coach,” he told Sky Germany. “20 points is very pleasing for a newly promoted team.”
Elated as his team returned to winning ways, Kwasniok added: “When you haven’t won for a while, a win feels a bit bigger. Objectively speaking, it’s three points. But today it’s three points with a sense of relief.”
Cologne travel to Freiburg next before welcoming Wolfsburg on Matchday 20.
