Mainz had to manage without their first-choice goalkeeper, Robin Zentner, for their last six games of 2025 due to injury.
And as Mainz coach Urs Fischer revealed ahead of his team’s first game of 2026 against 1. FC Union Berlin this weekend, the 31-year-old is still not ready to return.
Providing a personnel update on Thursday, Fischer said:
“Hanche (Andreas Hanche-Olsen, editor’s note) is a doubt for Saturday. [Robin] Zentner, [Philipp] Mwene and [Maxim] Leitsch are still working their way back to full fitness. Silas [Katompa Mvumpa] is ill and will also miss out. [Anthony] Caci is still in rehabilitative training, we’ll have to see when he returns.”
With Zentner still sidelined, Daniel Batz will continue to deputise in goal.
Mainz sit bottom of the Bundesliga with eight points for 15 games heading into the game.
