We’ll have to wait until this summer at the earliest to discover the next France manager. Didier Deschamps is resigning from his post at the conclusion of the World Cup, and we won’t know who will replace him until then. That’s according to French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo.
He says it’s important not to have too many distractions within the team so they can focus on the ultimate goal: claiming a third World Cup title. He said, therefore, his first option is to name a successor to Deschamps after the World Cup campaign ends for Les Bleus.
There is widespread speculation that the new boss will be Zinedine Zidane, who has not been in management since leaving Real Madrid for a second time in 2021. Deschamps has been at the helm of the French team since 2012.
This announcement by Diallo signals a different course of action from previous situations. In 2010, Laurent Blanc had already been confirmed as Raymond Domenech’s successor before the World Cup began. France exited the tournament in the group stage in embarrassing fashion, with just one point. They made headlines for walking out on training and going on strike following their final group match against South Africa.
The French begin their 2026 World Cup journey on June 16 against Senegal, who famously upset them as defending world champions in the opening match ofhe 2002 World Cup. France’s final group fixture will be against Norway on June 26.
