Bayern Munich could welcome Alphonso Davies back to their squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Sporting CP.
The Canadian left-back has been sidelined since March due to a cruciate ligament tear suffered on international duty, but he is now nearing a return.
While he is unlikely to feature on the pitch against Sporting, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany revealed he could potentially be included in the squad.
“We still need to talk about Alphonso Davies, but there’s a chance he’ll be in the squad tomorrow,” Kompany said.
“I think it’ll be a tight game. I don’t think he’ll get any minutes. Everything before Christmas is a bonus. But there’s a chance he plays this week.”
Bayern will certainly be without Luis Diaz, who is suspended. Since a yellow-card ban also rules him out of Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Mainz, the forward has been given some time off.
“Lucho has played every game for us and his national team. He has had the longest journeys. He played in England and never had Christmas off. It’s fine for him to have a few days off and go away. He’ll return in a top mental state and pick up where he left off. He’ll be back in a few days,” Kompany explained.
“Sometimes we give players a little extra time off, but they have an individual training programme and keep working at home. The guys work almost every day and also have their own private physios.”
In addition to Diaz, Bayern are also expected to be without Sacha Boey, who missed Saturday’s win over Stuttgart due to illness and was absent from Monday’s training.
Meanwhile, Jamal Musiala remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from a fibula fracture and ankle dislocation sustained during the Club World Cup.
