Former Liverpool manager and pundit Graeme Souness has praised defender Aaron Hickey ahead of Scotland’s World Cup qualification playoff match against Ukraine. The 19-year-old made his debut for the nation, who went on to lose 3-1, missing out on a place at this winter’s World Cup.
Hickey has been linked with a move to both Arsenal and Tottenham this summer, with the two North London clubs set to battle it out for his signature. The full-back made 36 Serie A appearances for Bologna last season, scoring five and assisting one.
His ability to play both on the left and right of the defence make him a versatile option with plenty of ability and promise for the future. For the Gunners, the Scotland international could provide cover for compatriot Kieran Tierney, who has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign.

While summer signing Nuno Tavares has also been an option in his absence, the Portuguese left-back has often struggled when called upon. However, Spurs’ interest adds some drama to the transfer race.
Antonio Conte has his own decisions to make when it comes to wing-backs, with Sergio Reguilon, Ryan Sessegnon, Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty unable to confidently claim a first-team shirt on a consistent basis. Hickey could be viewed as an option for either flank going into next season.
And both sides have been told how promising he is by Souness, who said on Sky Sports ahead of Scotland versus Ukraine: “I am really interested to see how this young man does, if you’ve played 36 games this year in Serie A, then you have something about you. It’s not an easy league.”
It remains to be seen who will land the final blow in the race for the youngster’s signature, if anyone does, but they could have a fine prospect for the future on their hands.
