One prospective Sheffield Wednesday buyer proposed purchasing the club with the plan of merging with fierce rivals Sheffield United. The EFL Championship club are looking for a buyer after being placed into administration in October following the disastrous mismanagement of former owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Since then, the club’s administrators have been fielding calls from interested parties who are keen to purchase one of English football’s most iconic football clubs.
The Owls sit bottom of the Championship at the moment and are all but certain to be playing in League One next term after being hit with a 12-point deduction. The hope is that a new buyer can restore this famous club to their former glory.
Prospective Buyer Eyes Shock Merger
Sheffield Wednesday’s search for a new owner has attracted plenty of attention from individuals and consortiums who want to purchase the South Yorkshire giants.
According to Mike Keegan at the Daily Mail, five offers have already been made to purchase the Owls with two more expected to arrive in the coming days. Of the five offers made, three of those are considered to be in serious contention to complete a deal and attempt to lead the club back to their former glory.
One interested party who will not be progressing proposed the idea of merging Wednesday with their fierce rivals Sheffield United if their offer was successful. Unsurprisingly, that bid was swiftly rejected by the administrators who were more focused on the more realistic offers received.
A Sheffield Merger Would Be An Absolute Disaster

It shouldn’t really need explaining, but a merger between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United would be absolute chaos. The Steel City derby is among the most fierce in UK football and so the idea of the two teams merging to form a Sheffield super team is almost unthinkable.
It was only a few days ago that we saw how much the rivalry meant as Chris Wilder’s Blades secured a 3-0 win over the Owls and riled up the home fans by posing for a celebratory photo on the Hillsborough turf.
Sheffield Wednesday fans would be rightly furious if such a proposal was entertained. I’m sure some Sheffield United fans would love the idea of it, but football is all about rivalries and so the prospect of two massive clubs joining forces was never really on the cards.
Hopefully the Owls can find a suitable buyer and get themselves back into contention to rival Wilder’s side on a more regular basis moving forward.
