Rani Khedira scored his second goal of the season to help Union Berlin return home with three points from St. Pauli. The capital city club is now in eighth place after following up the Bayern draw with a hard-fought victory.
“I was on the phone with my daughter this morning,” said Khedira in his post-match interview. “She said to me that I would score a goal today. It was all the more wonderful that it actually worked out. The pure emotions in the stands after my goal remind me what’s special about football.”
Meanwhile, Christopher Trimmel emphasised the lack of chances at either end. “Both teams defended very well. We certainly had a bit of luck, but we worked hard for the win,” said Union Berlin’s captain.
“In the second half, we defended as a team, and once helped by the post,” said coach Steffen Baumgart. “Ultimately, we got three points from a difficult game away from home. We want to build on the positive mood.”
