John Terry has been speaking about his former club Chelsea and who they should consider signing next summer with the Blues linked to several talented central defenders
Chelsea legend John Terry believes the Blues should be looking at bringing Marc Guehi back to the club next summer with the Crystal Palace defender set to be out of contract at Selhurst Park.
Guehi looks set to leave the Eagles at the end of the season after moving to south London in July 2021 from the Blues on a five-year contract. The 25-year-old defender has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons and has now established himself as an England international.
Liverpool came close to signing Guehi in the summer with the former Chelsea defender completing part of his medical to move to Anfield, but Palace pulled the plug at the last second after a deal to bring a replacement was viewed as impossible. The Reds are still said to have a keen interest in Guehi, but are not alone, with Bayern Munich also reported suitors.
Chelsea have kept a close eye on Guehi since he left Stamford Bridge over four years ago, though the Blues are happy with their current options at centre-back, football.london understands. Terry has a different view to the sporting directors at the club, however, and wants his former club to consider bringing the England defender back to Stamford Bridge.
When asked on the Obi One Podcast about the areas of the squad Chelsea should address, Terry said: “I’d love to see Marc Guehi come back. We had a buy-back [clause] at one point as well. He’s available – why wouldn’t he come back?”
Victor Osimhen was another name that came up during a fan Q&A with Terry and his former Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel. The Blues strongly considered signing the Nigerian striker during the summer of 2024 but deemed his wages to be too high and chose against bringing him to SW6.
Twelve months later, Chelsea decided to bring Joao Pedro – a versatile attacker who can lead the line as well as operate in other areas in the final third – to the club for a total package understood to be in the region of £60million. The 24-year-old started excellently for the Blues when he arrived for the latter stages of the Club World Cup in the United States, with three goals in two games – the semi-final and final – inspiring his new club to global success.
Two goals in his opening three games of the Premier League season left Chelsea supporters in awe of their new striker, though there was a bit of a drought afterwards for the Brazil international. Joao Pedro, though, has rekindled his early form in recent games, scoring in back-to-back Premier League matches for the west Londoners.
“I think if you look at Joao Pedro, he wouldn’t have been top of my list [in the summer transfer window], but I think he’s been great so far,” Terry said. “He’s had a really good start to his Chelsea career and I think a lot of strikers come in and don’t get off to the start that he’s got off to so I’m delighted for him.”
