Wolves could be looking to back Rob Edwards in the January transfer window if they want to stand any chance of surviving in the Premier League this season, and GIVEMESPORT have taken a look at two signings they could make.
The Wanderers are sitting bottom of the table in England’s top flight, and having picked up just two points all season, remaining in the top division is looking increasingly unlikely. As a result of their struggles, Wolves opted to sack Vitor Pereira, bringing in Edwards from Middlesbrough.
Jeff Shi and the board will be hoping that the introduction of Edwards will be enough to steer them back in the right direction, but reinforcements in the January window may also be necessary. It will be interesting to see if Edwards looks to raid his former club for players, while they could also be forced into bringing in players from England due to registration rules.
Two Players Wolves Could Sign After Edwards Appointment
The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently reported that Wolves are set to back Wolves in the January market after Edwards’ appointment. The respected journalist also confirmed that Wolves will likely be forced to focus on bringing in homegrown players due to registration rules, unless they offload one of their foreign stars.
One player Wolves could look to bring in is Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. John Percy recently reported that Wolves wanted to bring him in during the summer window and felt a deal could be struck, but they failed to get it over the line. The Wanderers might be hoping that Edwards’ appointment might help their case in convincing Hackney to make the move, but there might be concerns that Middlesbrough won’t want to do business for their former manager.
Hackney would fit into the homegrown category, while also being a player Edwards knows well. Ipswich had reportedly reached an agreement for Hackney to join in the summer for a fee of around £20m, before it fell through, so it will be interesting to see how much they’d demand in January.
Ornstein also confirmed that adding players in the final third could also be a major priority for Wolves. Edwards knows the Championship well having managed there for multiple years, and one homegrown forward impressing at the moment is Jaden Philogene.
Philogene has struck six times for Ipswich Town in the Championship this season, and he could be the type of profile Wolves need. The England youth international would bring the pace, trickery, and arrogance in his game that they’ve been missing since Matheus Cunha left the club.
It won’t be easy to attract these players in January, but if Fosun are serious about backing Edwards in the market and surviving in the Premier League, they might need to splash the cash.
