Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is ‘considering retirement’ after falling ill during a training session with Brazilian top flight side São Paulo on Tuesday.
The Brazilian, 34, is believed to have fallen unconscious for around two minutes during an interval test on an exercise bike and was rushed to the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo where he remains in the intensive care unit, according to reports from Global Esporte.
Oscar featured 203 times for Chelsea between 2012 and 2016, before making a controversial £60m move to Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Port in the January window of 2017, and went on to make 242 appearances in eight years in China on a £400k-per-week deal.
Earlier this year, the 48-time capped Brazil international returned to his boyhood club São Paulo, but has played just 21 times for the Tricolour, and may have now already played his final game in professional football.
Former Chelsea Ace Oscar Could be Forced to Retire
Oscar’s most recent outing for the Brazilian giants came in their 2-0 win over Corinthians, during which the attacking midfielder suffered a fractured vertebrae and was withdrawn after just 16 minutes on the clock, and has only managed to make the bench as an unused substitute in two games since.
Global Esporte’s report adds that Oscar is now debating an “amicable termination” of his contract with the Brazilian Serie A side, which is set to expire in 2027, and that “the chance of this happening is high.”
The two-time Premier League title winner has reportedly been suffering with a heart problem for several months, after scans following the aforementioned injury revealed an “abnormality”, but the 34-year-old was given the all-clear to return to the field.
However, according to reports, Oscar has let it be known to close family and friends that “he would stop playing if he had any chance, however small, of feeling unwell on the field.”
On Tuesday, Sao Paolo confirmed the news in an official statement. The club said:
“During tests carried out on Tuesday morning (11), at SuperCT, as part of the preparation for the 2026 pre-season, athlete Oscar presented an incident with cardiological changes, being promptly attended to by the club’s professionals and the medical team from Einstein Hospital Israelita, who were present at the site.
“The player was then taken to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and remains under observation for further tests to clarify the diagnosis.
“As per standard procedure and respecting the player’s privacy, new information will be released as soon as there is an update from the medical team, in agreement with Oscar.”
Oscar won the CSL title and Chinese Cup during his final full campaign for Shanghai Port before returning to his boyhood club, and those achievements could unfortunately prove to be the last in a glistening trophy cabinet for the former Stamford Bridge star.
