Niko Kovac has generally managed to stabilise Borussia Dortmund since taking over as head coach from Nuri Sahin at the end of January. However, it seems that not everything behind the scenes is running smoothly.
After Dortmund conceded a late 1-1 equaliser against Hamburger SV on Saturday, Bild describes the Bundesliga team as a “powder keg” and calls the situation “explosive.” Criticism of Kovac is reportedly growing “behind closed doors.”
On one hand, recent weeks have shown Dortmund to be outclassed by top teams such as Bayern Munich (1-2) and Manchester City (1-4).
At the same time, the coach’s pragmatic playing style – focused more on control than on attacking flair – has drawn criticism.
For example, Kovac made defensive substitutions in an attempt to protect the 1-0 lead against HSV rather than pushing for a second goal to seal the win.
According to Bild, Dortmund now plan to use the international break to regroup and extinguish the many small flare-ups.
