The 2025 NBA regular season is underway, which means Kevin Durant has already made his season debut for the
Houston Rockets. The all-time great is on a title contender again, and seven games in, KD still looks like KD.
The 37-year-old is leading the 5–2 Rockets with 24 points per game as he continues to add to his first-ballot Hall of Fame. Durant has seen it all at this level, and is well-versed in the Herculean effort it takes to hoist a Larry O’Brien trophy.
The 15-time All-Star has won two NBA titles, both coming with the
Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. Durant won back-to-back Finals MVPs with the Dubs, playing with several future Hall of Famers like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.
Season 2 of Netflix’s “Starting 5” featured KD and the star forward gave an eye-opening take that immediately set off his former teammate, Draymond Green.
How Kevin Durant and Draymond Green’s back-and-forth over Warriors’ championships came about
Durant spoke on the Netflix show about the importance of scoring while also noting how that trait takes significant precedence over defense.
Draymond Green, who is one of the best defenders of his generation, subsequently responded to these comments on his podcast, while taking a subtle shot at Durant in the process.
Green was the centerpiece of the Warriors’ defense during their dynasty and still continues to be elite on that side of the floor.
“If you look at most teams that couldn’t quite get over the hump, oftentimes it’s (because) they couldn’t get stops. That fact still remains, and I think that those who don’t believe it, don’t win. It’s very simple. Those who don’t believe defense is as valuable as it is, they simply just don’t win. I don’t think anyone’s ever really been hell-bent on caring about the opinion of those that don’t win, because your opinion equals zero. I know how ‘K’ thinks about the game of basketball. Like, I know that there are some all-time greats — all-time greats; I mean, like some of the elite of the elite — who don’t quite have what Kevin would consider an offensive bag, and he doesn’t really think that player is as great as the masses may think, because of how he views the game….He won here, (and) the defense here was incredible.”
Durant, who’s always been an active user of Twitter, didn’t take long to fire back at Draymond’s response, getting right to the point on what the real strength of the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty was.
Kevin Durant and Draymond Green both have valid points in this viral exchange
In the end, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Kevin Durant and Draymond Green. The two have had these kinds of back-and-forth before, and it never goes into the personal route.
And, for this topic, they both raise valid points. The Golden State Warriors revolutionized the NBA with their pace and proficiency from three-point range.
Yet, Steve Kerr’s team has also had several elite defenses on the floor, particularly during its most dominant run in 2017. That Golden State squad is considered among the best teams in NBA history.

It’s important to note that the three other years the Warriors either made the Finals or won the championship (2014-15, 2015-16, and 2021-22), their offensive rating was ranked second, first, and 16th in the league, while the defensive rating came in first, sixth, and second those years.
The
Oklahoma City Thunder have ultimately shown how important a role defense still plays even as the NBA has become more skill-based. And not everyone can excel on that side of the floor.
The Warriors were excellent at both ends during this dynasty, with Durant and Green being essential players in their roles.
