Southampton announced the return of Oriol Romeu to St Mary’s on Thursday, but the 34-year-old has confirmed he won’t be available to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
The Spaniard has completed a sensational free transfer switch following a seven-year spell with Southampton between 2015-2022, plying his trade for Barcelona and Girona in between before being released from his contract by the former this summer.
The transfer is a boost for Saints supporters who have endured a tough few months – and truthfully, years – following their latest relegation to the Championship.
Southampton Announce Romeu Return Until 2026
Romeu has re-joined Southampton on an initial deal until 2026, where he will link up with some former teammates such as Alex McCarthy, Adam Armstrong and captain Jack Stephens.
Saints have been crying out for some leadership and experience too, with Wednesday night’s win against Queens Park Rangers just their third league success of the season.
The three points in west London came on the back of Will Still’s sacking on Sunday night, following the 2-0 home defeat to Preston North End on the previous day.
Saints remain in 19th position in the table, although they are only eight points adrift of Charlton – managed by Nathan Jones – in sixth.
Romeu Set to Make Second Debut After International Break
Southampton fans hoping to see Romeu back in action at St Mary’s against fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday this weekend look set to be disappointed though.
Despite making 31 appearances in all competitions for Girona last season, Romeu has had no pre-season and no club minutes since 2024-25 and will need time to get up to speed before making his second bow.
Speaking on the official club website following the signing announcement, the Spaniard said:
“I feel pretty good, to be honest. But I haven’t had game time for a few months and that needs to be worked on. I think I will get there pretty soon, I guess after the international break I will be ready to help the team.”
If Romeu is correct, Southampton fans could finally see him in the matchday squad for the visit to Jones’ Charlton on November 22.
