Last year’s Bundesliga Player of the Year is coming off one of the more efficient seasons witnessed in recent memory. After such a year, many believed Christopher Nkunku would switch to one of the top clubs in world football. However, that was not the case.
Sport Bild wondered if the Frenchman was disappointed that Leipzig refused to sell him this summer: “No & I’ll explain why. It was the first time in my career my club had said to me that I’m too important to give up. That’s a feeling you can’t describe.”
The 24-year-old signed a contract extension in June, but the Red Bull club are off to another rough start. Nkunku understands he must step up if Leipzig want to reclaim their top four status:
“Great players are not only characterized by a good year. The best are constantly playing at this level. This is my next goal. Yes, I want to become a world footballer. That would be the biggest award you can win. It’s a dream, but you should always strive for the highest.”
