Chris Sutton says Celtic should hire Ange Postecoglou as Brendan Rodgers’ permanent successor following Martin O’Neill’s appointment as interim manager.
The Hoops announced Rodgers’ resignation on Monday amid accusations from major shareholder Dermot Desmond of ‘divisive’ behaviour and took no time to name a replacement, with O’Neill making his return to Parkhead after 20 years.
The 73-year-old made an emphatic start to his interim duties on Wednesday as Celtic cruised to a 4-0 home victory over Falkirk, returning to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership.
Despite a positive start, O’Neill is unlikely to be a long-term appointment for Celtic, and Sutton says he sees ‘no other strong candidate’ besides Postecoglou to take over managerial duties from the Northern Irish tactician.
Sutton Tips Postecoglou for Celtic Job
Sutton, writing in his column for the Daily Record, said he would like to see Postecoglou return to Celtic following Rodgers’ departure but also welcomed the possibility of the Hoops moving for Kieran McKenna:
“If you’re asking who I’d want to see as the club’s next manager, I’d say Ange Postecoglou. But the truth is I don’t think that will happen as it sounds like he wants a break.
“I’d like to think the club has asked. I’ve heard the other candidates like everyone else. Some good names in there such as Kieran McKenna, but if it’s not Postecoglou, I have no other strong candidate at the top of my mind.
“For now, it’s Martin and Shaun and their job is to ensure Celtic are still fighting for the honours by the time the new guy enters the building.”
Postecoglou is unlikely to return to management any time soon after being relieved of his duties at Nottingham Forest just 39 days after taking charge.
The Australian oversaw the shortest managerial stint in Premier League history at the City Ground, and failed to record a win in his eight games in charge.
Postecoglou spent just over two years at Celtic following his appointment in the summer of 2021.
He won the league and league cup double in his first season before adding another Premiership crown and the Scottish Cup the following campaign.
The ‘top-class’ Australian tactician managed 113 games during his 25-month spell with the Hoops, winning 83 and averaging 2.31 points per match.
