Chelsea battled past Wolves on Wednesday night to book their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Chelsea rode their luck on Wednesday night as they edged past Wolves in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The Blues, who will take on Cardiff City away from home in mid-December in the quarter-final of the competition, were cruising up until the half-time break with the majority of those inside Molineux voicing their discontent with what they saw from the hosts, not only on the night but since the start of the campaign.
However, there was a fightback from Wolves in the second period and some lapse defending from Chelsea helped inspire the home side. The tie ended 4-3 in the Blues’ favour, with Liam Delap’s late red card undoubtedly the talking point.
Delap picked up two yellow cards in the space of seven minutes and will now miss Saturday’s Premier League trip to Tottenham. While there were a few negatives to point out from the win, there were also numerous positives from a Chelsea perspective.
Not least Jamie Gittens. It felt as if the 21-year-old winger properly introduced himself as a Blues player on Wednesday, with two assists and a goal in the west Midlands.
Gittens teed up Andrey Santos for the opening goal of the game, before the England Under-21 international put the ball on a plate for Tyrique George to double the visitors’ lead. He got himself on the scoresheet late in the tie with what turned out to be the decisive goal, with Gittens using the outside of his right foot to smash the ball in off the post from long distance.
Estevao Willian scored his third goal of the season for the west Londoners in the first-half. After some careless play in the Wolves midfield, Santos pounced and set up his Brazilian compatriot, who dinked the ball over a helpless Jose Sa.

“Thank God for everything,” Estevao said on his Instagram page when reflecting on another superb performance. “Very happy for the win and the goal. All glory to him.”
Santos, who put in his best performance in a Chelsea shirt to date at Molineux, was also keen to express his delight on social media. “Very happy with the assist and my first goal for Chelsea,” Santos said on his Instagram. “An important win, we keep going!”
The Brazilian, earlier this month, announced that him and his partner were expecting a second child, a baby boy named Bryan. Santos added: “For you, my Bryan.”
The Blues now have little over 48 hours to recover and prepare for the trip to Spurs on Saturday evening. The good news for Enzo Maresca is that he was able to rest a number of key players. Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez both played about 30 minutes, while Moises Caicedo came on with just a few minutes remaining, as did Pedro Neto.
Joao Pedro, who has been struggling with his fitness over the last month, was named on the bench but was not used as Chelsea progressed in the Carabao Cup. Robert Sanchez, Reece James and Wesley Fofana were also on the bench but did not come on at any point.
