Charles Barkley Called Out Giannis Antetokounmpo for Latest Milwaukee Bucks Drama

The 2025-26 NBA season is two days away, and plenty of teams and fans will be entering this basketball year with renewed hope that their rosters are good enough to contend.

The NBA is a star-driven league, meaning that all it takes is one player to change the fortunes of a franchise and give it a championship window.

Nevertheless, there is one transcendent talent from this generation who hasn’t been on a legit title contender in a while, and that is Milwaukee Bucks‘ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Greek Freak is the best power forward in the world, perennial MVP candidate, and already a first-ballot Hall of Famer with his resume.

In addition, Giannis is still only 30 years old and coming off another phenomenal season of his prime. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the Milwaukee Bucks after another first-round loss to the Indiana Pacers.

This franchise ultimately has a very murky future in the Eastern Conference, leading to speculation that Antetokounmpo might be on the move.

While Giannis has stayed loyal to the team that drafted him in 2013, Charles Barkley is not happy with a recent development between the star forward and his franchise. The Hall of Famer ultimately believes this saga reflects one of the main issues with today’s NBA.

Charles Barkley has frequently given Giannis Antetokounmpo his just praise, often calling the Greek Freak the best player in the world. The ex-player turned analyst, however, was disappointed with a recent comment made by Giannis.

The two-time MVP noted how he’s focused on staying with the Bucks right now, but that could change soon, especially if the season goes awry.

These comments followed a report by Shams Charania about Antetokounmpo discussing his future with the front office this past summer.

Shams relayed that Giannis singled out the New York Knicks as his preferred destination should he be dealt. While Antetokounmpo never officially requested a trade, this string of news set Barkley off.

In an interview on the Rich Eisen Show, the Hall of Fame power forward blasted the Bucks’ superstar, noting that this situation reflects a widespread issue in the NBA.

As Barkley notes, the Bucks franchise has frequently tried to build a contender around their marquee star. Most recently, the front office signed Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner after waiving point guard Damian Lillard.

Unfortunately, the rest of the roster leaves much to be desired, especially at the guard position. Milwaukee, therefore, is still far away from contending in the Eastern Conference.

To compound matters, this team doesn’t have much draft capital over the next five years, making another blockbuster trade unlikely unless it involves Antetokounmpo.

Giannis is under contract through the 2027 season and has a player-option the following year. The nine-time All-Star currently has a ton of trade value and is still in the middle of his prime.

Considering the haul the Memphis Grizzlies received for Desmond Bane, the Bucks could completely rebuild their draft war chest if they dealt their superstar, which would presumably be their focus.

The New York Knicks, on the other hand, do not have the draft capital to pull off this kind of transaction and would be offering up players at a similar stage of their careers to Giannis.

Overall, time will tell whether Antetokounmpo spends his entire career with one team. Speculation aside, Barkley’s comments seem a little harsh at the moment, especially since the Bucks star still hasn’t asked for a trade when he easily could.
