Colin Cowherd Named the 7 NFL Teams that can make the Super Bowl – Buffalo Bills Snubbed

The 2025 NFL season is approaching its midway point, which means some teams are starting to distinguish themselves as true contenders.

Super Bowl LX is set to be a historic event, and so far, there isn’t a clear favorite in either conference to qualify for this game. However, six weeks into the season, Colin Cowherd believes only seven teams have a realistic shot of winning their conferences.

And the Fox Sports media personality shockingly omitted two preseason favorites, the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams from his list. Here are the seven teams that made the cut for Cowherd.

Philadelphia Eagles

Jalen Hurts Saquon Barkley

The flaws in the defending champs are coming to light, and the Philadelphia Eagles have now lost two straight games after a 4-0 start.

The offense is off to a very slow start under new OC Kevin Patulla, and is near the bottom of the league in both passing and rushing yards per game.

Meanwhile, the defense has been largely solid, but was just run over Cam Skattebo and the New York Giants‘ physical ground game. While the Eagles look far from the team they were last season, they are still in first place in the NFC East.

“I do think Philadelphia will right the ship with their running game.”

Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have the worst record out of the seven teams on Cowherd’s list. Fortunately, Patrick Mahomes and company are just a game back from first place in the AFC West and coming off an encouraging home win over the Detroit Lions.

The all-time great quarterback has been largely terrific this season, despite the uncertainty at running back and receiver. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ defense is still a top 10 unit under decorated coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Overall, Cowherd is giving the three-time defending AFC champs the benefit of the doubt as they look to continue their dynasty.

“In terms of Kansas City, I don’t understand what everybody else is watching. I mean, with the eye test, they are fast defensively, and they have the best quarterback, head coach, defensive coordinator trio in the sport.”

Denver Broncos

Nik Bonitto-1

The Denver Broncos entered the season as a dark-horse Super Bowl contender and have looked the part at times in 2025. Sean Payton‘s team has one of the best defenses in the NFL and an emerging young quarterback in Bo Nix.

The former Oregon standout is off to an uneven start in 2025, posting a QBR that ranks 21st overall, but has shown his upside in a few high-profile matchups. Denver currently sits at 4-2 overall and is tied for first place in the AFC West.

Cowherd ultimately has faith that the Broncos’ quarterback will improve as the year goes on, which is a reasonable prediction considering his track record.

“I believe that Bo Nix will get more consistent as the season progresses.”

Seattle Seahawks

Colin Cowherd has always been a huge fan of Sam Darnold, and the Seattle Seahawks‘ new quarterback has been proving him right these past two seasons.

The 28-year-old is a legit MVP candidate this season for a franchise looking to return to the postseason after a two-year absence.

The Seahawks are firmly in the top 10 in scoring offense and defense, meaning that this 4-2 squad has all the makings of an NFC contender.

Green Bay Packers

MIcah Parsons

The Green Bay Packers were the hottest team in the NFL two weeks into the season, yet they have had a few uneven performances on offense and defense since.

A Week 6 victory over the injury-riddled Cincinnati Bengals isn’t going to win over many believers, but this team has a ceiling that is certainly capable of winning an NFC Championship.

Detroit Lions

jared goff wins

The Detroit Lions are off to an explosive offensive start, averaging 31.8 points per game through the first six weeks. Star quarterback Jared Goff has plenty of weapons around him, including a great offensive line, two quality running backs, and one of the best receivers in the league.

Meanwhile, the Lions’ defense has a quality front seven, but there are still some major concerns in the secondary once again, particularly at cornerback.

Detroit needs Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed back and fully healthy if they want to hoist their first Lombardi Trophy.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently have the best record in the NFC thanks to the league’s current MVP frontrunner, Baker Mayfield. Todd Bowles‘ team has prided itself on winning close games, which explains the 14+ point differential.

Despite the flaws in the secondary, holding four wins against playoff contenders like the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, and the San Francisco 49ers is an encouraging sign for a franchise looking to make that good-to-great leap.

The Snubs

Rams

The two teams that immediately stand out as snubs are the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, two preseason contenders that are currently at 4-2.

Buffalo’s biggest concern right now is its rush defense, which is currently letting up 156.3 yards per contest. Meanwhile, the Rams’ ground game could use some improvement, and the passing attack is highly reliant on superstar receiver Puka Nacua staying healthy.

Cowherd still has these two teams in the tier below the seven above, but that doesn’t mean they’re eliminated from contention yet, according to him.

Overall, though, this list will definitely draw some pushback, even after Cowherd highlighted the caveats at the end of his segment.

“Then, I would put the Colts, the Rams, San Francisco, and the Bills…The Rams would maybe be in it, but they lost Puka Nacua, and they are very reliant on Puka Nacua in big bouts. San Francisco, I think they’re going to get healthier when they get Piersall, Aiyuk, and Kittle back. I don’t know if they can hoist a trophy, but Brock Purdy is also coming back, so I’m going to put them on the edges.”
