German Bundestrainer Hans-Dieter Flick called the loss of Marco Reus over the coming international break “a great pity” in a Sunday DFB press release. After wishing the Borussia Dortmund skipper “a speedy recovery ahead of the coming World Cup”, Flick also confirmed that Benjamin Henrichs will be nominated as Reus’ replacement.
The 25-year-old fullback midfielder, part of Joachim Löw’s 2017 Confederations Cup winning squad, returned to the national team after a three-year-hiatus in the autumn of 2020. After going unused through 2021, Flick called Henrichs back up during the last two international break. He’s made two brief appearances as a sub in the current calendar year.
