While all eyes have been glued to the reports of possible newcomers for Gerardo Seoane’s Bayer Leverkusen senior squad, the Werksclub have been quietly going about business elsewhere.
Bayer 04 U-19 captain Joshua Eze was handed a senior contract on Tuesday. The defensive midfielder penned a deal till 2024, and sporting director Simon Rolfes gave a warm welcome to the academy graduate – “Joshua was a central leader in our U19s. We will continue to support his career path over the next two years.”
While the senior team contract offers a chance for Eze to break his way into the team, his signing solves another concern for Bayer. He fills a spot on the homegrown talent quota, even if he’s sent on loan this season. It will surely be interesting to see what develops of the situation.
In other Werkself news, Belgian news outlet hbvl.be report that 16 year old defender Madi Monamay is set to sign for the red company team. The former OH Leuven defender impressed for KRC Genk in the Belgian youth league last season, and seems to have caught the eyes of the Leverkusen scouts.
Multiple news outlets also report that FC Hennef’s U-17 captain Arjanit Fazlija is also on his way to Leverkusen. The Kosovo junior national team player is speculated to move to Bayer’s U-19 squad to take the next step in his development.
Elsewhere, Hungarian club MOL Fehérvár FC have confirmed in a statement on Twitter that attacker Márton Szép is also due to move to Germany and sign for Leverkusen.
Should all of these changes go through, Bayer would be well advanced on their path to strengthen their youth setup. For the youngsters, it represents a chance to follow in the steps of big players who have taken the step from the academy into Bayer’s first team setup.
