Real Oviedo take shock decision to sack manager

The first managerial sacking of the La Liga season has occurred, and it has happened at a surprise location. Despite the likes of Girona, Real Sociedad and Mallorca having massively struggled in recent weeks, it is Real Oviedo that have decided to part wats with their head coach.

In an official statement on Thursday, Oviedo announced their decision to sack Veljko Paunovic. The 48-year-old, who led the Asturians back to La Liga for the first time in over 20 years at the end of last season, has lasted only eight matches into the new campaign.

“Real Oviedo have taken the decision to terminate Veljko Paunovic’s contract as coach of the first team. The blue coach, with a contract until June 30, 2026, ceases to be coach of the team from the capital of the Principality. Similarly, the coaching staff that accompanies him also ends his relationship with the Carbayona entity.

“Real Oviedo would like to express its gratitude to Veljko Paunovic and his coaching staff for their professionalism, commitment and dedication during his time at the helm of the team. Under his management, Real Oviedo achieved the long-awaited promotion to the First Division, a historic success that will remain forever in the memory of Oviedo. From the Club we wish him the greatest success in his future projects, both personal and professional.”

Oviedo’s decision has surprised many, especially considering the difficult run of fixtures they have had at the start of the season. Already, they have faced the top three (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal), with their two victories coming in impressive fashion against La Real and Valencia. However, this was not enough for club bosses.

In terms of replacing Paunovic, Oviedo have already started making arrangements. As per Diario AS, they have made contact with Luis Carrion, who was previously in charge at the Estadio Carlos Tartiare before joining Las Palmas in the summer of 2024. At this stage, he is the strong favourite to take charge.
