Nick Woltemade (21) opened the scoring for Newcastle United in their UEFA Champions League Matchday 2 clash against Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels on Wednesday evening.
The German forward guided the ball past Kjell Scherpen with a deft flick to take his tally to three goals in six appearances across all competitions for his new club. And according to Opta, Woltemade is the first Newcastle United player to score on both his first Premier League start and first UEFA Champions League start for the Magpies.
This comes just days after Bayern Munich’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed that the Premier League club were ‘idiots’ for spending €85m to sign the former Stuttgart player.
Speaking on Bayern’s failed pursuit, Rummenigge said: “I can only congratulate the people in Stuttgart for finding – let me use quotation marks here – ‘an idiot’ who paid that much money, because we certainly wouldn’t have done that in Munich.”
