When Gerardo Seoane was relieved of his duties as Borussia Mönchengladbach coach two weeks ago, U23 coach Eugen Polanski was put in charge on an interim basis.
After Gladbach drew 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen in Polanski’s first game in charge, reports suggested the 39-year-old had a real chance of being given the job permanently.
However, last week’s 4-6 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt raised questions about his future. The team were 0-6 down at one stage, but Polanski made tactical adjustments that helped Gladbach fight back to 4-6, earning him another game in charge.
According to Sport Bild, Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg will determine whether Polanski will be appointed Gladbach coach on a permanent basis.
The former Gladbach player remains the favorite for the role, with Belgian coach Philippe Clement considered the main alternative.
Meanwhile, the report also suggests that Elversberg chief Nils-Ole Book has been identified as a possible replacement for recently-sacked head of sport Roland Virkus.
Talks between Gladbach and Book have reportedly already taken place, but the sides remain far from an agreement.
