After a nail-biting Sunday, in which Europe retained the Ryder Cup in Bethpage, New York, it’s no surprise that the likes of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and even captain Luke Donald celebrated in style.
Europe went into the last day of the Ryder Cup with an emphatic lead and there was even talk of a record victory in the offing come the singles on Sunday. However, the US team finally turned up and pushed Donald’s team all the way before falling to a 15-13 defeat.
Only Ludvig Aberg won his singles match-up for the visitors on the final day, but that didn’t stop their celebrations, as the victors partied with their families and support staff. It has been reported that 120 bottles of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial champagne were consumed, and at almost £1,000 a bottle, it’s interesting to see who picked up the bill!
Team Europe Drink Big on Night of Ryder Cup Victory
It wasn’t just champagne that McIlroy and friends were drinking. In addition to the 120 bottles of Brut Imperial, over £18,000 worth of Belvedere Vodka was consumed, on top of 10 limited edition Hennessy 250th Anniversary cognac, worth more than £2,200 each.
However, it didn’t stop there, as the heroes partied into the early morning in New York. 60 bottles each of Moet MCIII and Moet Rose champagne were enjoyed, which were priced at £74,053.
In total, the Europeans racked up a bar tab north of £230,000. But after the stress endured over the weekend, and having to deal with the partisan US crowd, which went in hard on Rory McIlroy in particular, who repeatedly shouted back at them, and at one point refused to take his shot until the crowd quietened. On top of this, the Northern Irishman’s wife was subject to abuse, with footage emerging showing her being hit by a beer thrown from the crowd.
Team Europe had the final laugh, though, after Lowry holed his putt on the 18th to claim half a point, which retained the famous trophy. Although the Irishman may have overdone the celebrations, as he posted on X the morning after, alongside a crying emoji: “I might have a hangover.”
Regarding the celebrations, a source told The Sun: “It was a unique opportunity and a unique moment to celebrate, as winning on American soil is such a great achievement for Team Europe. After a long weekend of tension and stress, the goal was to have them celebrate and enjoy some of the best drinks we could offer.”
On top of the excessive amounts of alcohol that the team consumed on Sunday night, it has also been reported that each player was offered a special Hennessy Richard Lunar New Year 2025 cognac, which retails at almost £15,000!
