Kicker and Sport Bild both report that former Rangers head coach Philippe Clement is a candidate to work the Borussia Mönchengladbach bench. The 51-year-old former Belgian international has been without a job since the Glaswegian outfit sacked him this past February. Gladbach would constitute Clement’s first foray into the Bundesliga as either a player or coach.
It remains unclear why Gladbach might be interested in a coach without any direct German footballing experience. For the time being, interim head coach Eugen Polanski retains the backing of players and club management for at least one more league fixture, With the October international break looming, it appears as if BMG wishes to line up at least one experienced alternative to their rookie trainer.
Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has explicitly backed Polanski to remain in charge for the final Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg prior to the October break. This may not mean much as the general consensus within the BMG fan-base is that Virkus himself should probably be sacked. Gladbach supporters at Borussia Park yesterday evening held up “Virkus out!” banners.
“We don’t want to judge Eugen after two games,” Virkus noted in the mixed zone after yesterday evening’s loss. “He needs time to get to know the team. He deserves this fair chance.”
“It’s logical now that the coach is gone,” Virkus added in response to a question about the banners. “The focus now turns to the next person responsible on the sporting end.“
