Marcus Rashford stole the show as Barcelona got their Champions League campaign off to a win last week. The Englishman bagged a brace against Newcastle United as Barca secured a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park.
After that performance, it seemed almost guaranteed that Rashford would retain his place for Barca’s La Liga clash against Getafe just a few days later. However, Rashford was surprisingly dropped to the bench. It later emerged that Rashford was dropped after he was a few minutes late to the team’s Sunday morning meeting.
Hansi Flick does not tolerate lateness and punished the 27-year-old for his actions. Raphinha and Jules Kounde are just two Barca players that have previously been dropped to the bench for being late to team meetings. Rashford went on to replace Raphinha at half-time and helped his side to a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Paul Scholes Calls Out Marcus Rashford
Paul Scholes has reacted to Rashford being late for the team meeting and has slammed him for his behaviour. He also blasted the winger for his ‘disgraceful’ behaviour towards the end of his time at Man United and accused him of ‘quitting’ on his boyhood club.
“I really struggle to feel happy for Marcus Rashford,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, per the Metro. “Mainly because of his attitude. His attitude towards Man United towards the end was disgraceful.
“The amount of times I saw him walking because he wanted to leave… His whole demeanour about him was a disgrace. I think he quit on Man Utd. When you quit once, you’ll quit again. He was late last night [for Barcelona]. He won’t get away with that for long at Barca. There’s absolutely no chance.
“How can you sleep in these days? Your phone, f*****g alarm, whatever. How can you sleep in? He’s definitely got the talent to be [one of the best players in the world]. But he’ll never have the mentality.”
Nicky Butt also wasn’t complimentary of the United loanee, saying: “He needs to be aware, self-aware, he isn’t a baby anymore, he’s 27. He needs to be self-aware of the some of the stuff he does and how he projects himself.
“I thought we were going to come onto the show today and go ‘what about Marcus? What about that goal? I told you this’ and then he goes and does this and doesn’t turn up, he’s late for a game.”
Rashford has played six matches for Barcelona, scoring twice and recording two assists. He will be hoping to return to their starting lineup for their next match against Oviedo on Thursday.
