The New York Giants are not off to an ideal start, sitting at 0-3 a few weeks into the season. This historic franchise was 3-14 last year, but came into 2025 with some hope that a productive offseason would guide them back in the right direction.

One of those headline moves was signing future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson. The 36-year-old certainly is not in his prime, but the expectations were for him to be a stabilizing force at the league’s most important position.

So far, that has not been the case. Despite the encouraging performance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2, Wilson has had two poor performances early on in his Giants’ tenure.

On Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, the ten-time Pro Bowler threw for just 160 yards while committing two backbreaking interceptions in the 22-9 loss.

Brian Daboll is squarely on the hot seat after two disappointing years with “Big Blue.” The former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator was terrific in his first year with the Giants, but has struggled since, particularly at the quarterback position.

New York subsequently moved on from Daniel Jones last season, about a year and a half after the front office signed him to a four-year, $160 million contract extension.

Jones has gone from looking like a career backup to an MVP candidate after three weeks with the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, Wilson’s struggles have many calling for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to be the new starting quarterback

In the postgame of the Chiefs loss, Daboll was asked about committing to the legendary dual-threat quarterback for next weekend against the Los Angeles Chargers, giving this response.

The New York Giants need more consistency under center

The Giants turned some heads when they selected Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 22-year-old came into the league off after a successful career at Ole Miss.

Under head coach Lane Kiffin, Dart earned first-team All-SEC honors last season and was seen by scouts as a huge talent at the quarterback position.

That being said, Jaxson was also not projected to be an immediate starter due to concerns about his ability to read defenses, throwing mechanics, and his tendency to make big mistakes in high-stress situations.

Fortunately, those concerns have gradually been quieted down with the form that Dart showed in preseason.

What’s been even more encouraging about Jaxson’s progression is that he went into training camp as the third-string quarterback behind Wilson and Jameis Winston.

Dart has already passed Winston on the depth chart, who is generally considered one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL. Brian Daboll additionally has created some package plays for the young dual-threat QB, showcasing his eagerness to put him on the field.

Therefore, everything is trending in the right direction for Jaxson to start at some point this season. But the Giants are in a weird spot, where their head coach and general manager are in grave danger of losing their jobs, and they are trying to win now rather than build for the future.

That was part of the reason for bringing in Russell Wilson, to compete for a playoff spot in a crowded NFC East. Unfortunately, so far, the Giants are playing like the team that has only won nine games in the past two seasons.

New York is in desperate need of a spark, especially with the unforgiving schedule ahead. One rookie who has already shown he’s a lot better than his projection is rookie running back Cam Skattebo. There’s a chance Dart is next in line to prove the skeptics wrong.
